Teenage stress

Teenage stress

Yes Moms and Dads – teenagers do suffer from a lot of stress. And you thought that teenagers just caused stress! Shame on you! Teenage stress is very real and has a huge impact on both the teenager as well as the parents.

Let’s have a look at why teenagers are stressed. Becoming a teenager is a time of great change in one’s life and it is normally a very confusing time for many. I want to list a few of the challenges a teenager has to deal with:

• Physiological changes.

• Peer pressure.

• Finding your identity.

• Thinking of the future.

• Romance

• Self consciousness

• Fashion

• Schoolwork

• Sports

• Parents

• Friends

• Hormones

These are but a fraction of the stressful issues that teenagers have to deal with everyday of their lives. Now what can you do to reduce all of this stress? I believe that one of the most basic and also the most effective ways is to keep the channels of communication open.

If we can communicate with each other about the issues that bother us then we create an environment of understanding and acceptance.

Parents must not forget that they were also teenagers at some distant point in their past. It should also be acknowledged that times have changed and that there is a lot more stress these days for all involved.

Parents – be more understanding and patient!

Those of you who are teenagers need to keep in mind that this too shall pass. One of the best ways to deal with stress (for adults and teenagers) is to do something physical. Get involved in more sporting activities. Why not try yoga and meditation.

The great thing about being so young is that it is fairly easy to develop good habits that you will keep for the rest of your life.
